In his opening remarks, Peter reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting nationally significant growth in Greater Cambridge, backed by a strong cross-government focus led by Housing Minister Matthew Pennycook MP and Ox-Cam Growth Corridor Champion Lord Patrick Vallance.
While praising Cambridge’s strong record on housing delivery, Peter acknowledged that infrastructure constraints remain a barrier to continued success, stressing that investment in water and transport infrastructure will be required to support future growth and to maintain Cambridge’s exceptional quality of life.
He underlined the need for a strategic, place-led approach to growth - one shaped with communities and focused on creating well-connected, inclusive neighbourhoods supported by social infrastructure, green spaces, amenities, and services designed for the long term.
He also highlighted the role of the CGC Advisory Council, which brings together local leaders and experts to help guide the organisation’s work and ensure it reflects local priorities.
Following his remarks, Peter joined a panel discussion alongside representatives from Thakeham, Arup, Kier, and Form the Future. The panel explored how the construction industry can support sustainable, inclusive growth - through improved infrastructure planning, skills development, and the delivery of the social infrastructure communities need to thrive.
Reflecting on the conversation, Peter said:
“We need to do things differently if we’re to achieve truly sustainable growth. Collaboration between government, local partners, industry and communities will be essential to creating places that reflect the ambition and potential of Cambridge.”
